A rising wind power solution: Small-scale wind turbines

LuvSide develops, builds, and sells small vertical axis small wind turbines to businesses, private owners, and communities. Our mission is to bring autonomous and sustainable energy to organizations and people in remote landscapes, windy regions, and coastal areas.

Since our foundation in 2014, we have worked with enterprises like Siemens and Vonk; installed turbines in countries including Germany, the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia; and operated on both onshore and offshore locations of the North Sea, urban areas and natural preservation regions.

World Gross Electricity Production 2017

Energy Production 2017 - as wind turbine manufacturers, we are part of the 4% of energy produced by the wind sector

Electricity and energy are the bedrock of human society

Civilization is essentially built upon the use of electricity and energy. From a morning coffee to an evening commute, we rely on the supply of electrical power to navigate through daily agendas. According to the International Energy Agency, year-on-year global electricity production and consumption have grown continuously since 1974 (IEA, 2019). In 2017, 66.8 % of total world gross electricity generation came from combustible fuels while only 23 % was from wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal or tidal energy.

Fueling electricity by fueling the earth

Electricity generation does not come without a cost, but the cost is beyond monetary terms. Burning fossil fuels for power production emits greenhouse gas such as CO2 and methane. After years of extensive research, the scientific community agrees that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are the dominant cause of the Earth’s average temperature increases over the past 250 years (IPCC, 2014).

Among all sources of greenhouse gas emission, the burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat holds responsibility for 25 % of 2010’s global greenhouse gas emission. It is the largest single source of global greenhouse gas emissions (IPCC, 2014).

Climate change and global warming threatens our every-day lives.

Climate Change: The most crucial global cause

Climate change and global warming have become two of the most pressing issues in the modern age. Resulting from industrialized greenhouse gas emission of day-to-day human activities, climate change drives sea level to rise, heat waves to attack, and storms and wildfire to intensify. Consequently, both natural ecosystems and human society are put under threat of extreme climate happenings.

Social to political; individual to collateral

In recent years, citizens and governments have become more aware of how human activities and industry operations impact the climate. Grassroots campaigns demanding changes and solutions such as Fridays For Future grow from individual actions into worldwide movements. Governments work to implement greener policies domestically and internationally, establishing the 2016 Paris Agreement. The energy sector, especially energy generation, lies in the center of the topic.

Greenhouse gas emissions of electricity generation in the EU from 1990 to 2017 has dropped by 20%.
Renewable energy became the largest contributing source to energy production in the EU in 2017.

Turning towards renewable energy and sustainability

As the generation and use of electricity remains a necessity to our lives and a main source of greenhouse gas emission, altering how we produce and consume energy is one of the most crucial yet straightforward solutions to climate change. Renewable energy such as wind and solar energy brings forth the sustainable transformation in need.

In 2017, the Energy industries take up 28.2% of European Union’s greenhouse gas emission. Although remaining the largest source of emissions, it has remarkably decreased by 22 % compared to 1990 levels. Why? Renewable energy (30 % of total EU energy production) was the largest contributing source to energy production in the EU (Eurostat, 2019). Going further, the European Commission calls for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.

Leading the change with LuvSide technology

As the emerging supplier of small vertical axis wind turbines, we believe clean, decentralized energy generation is the solution. LuvSide’s vertical axis wind turbines not only harness wind power, but also ensures autonomous power supply with excess electricity stored or fed directly into the grid. This allows electrical power to be produced and supplied locally, eventually driving green energy transformation from ground zero — companies, institutions, and our homes.

The sustainable solution, the powerful turn

Pioneering the small vertical axis wind turbine industry, the flow-optimized geometry and blade technology make our turbines incomparably robust and suitable even under extreme weather. Unlike previous models of small vertical axis wind turbines in the market, our turbines operate with significantly higher energy efficiency. In this newly-emerging industry, LuvSide turbines demonstrate limitless potential as the standard solution and public representation for wind power generation.

Monika Heinold: "Energy transition and research thought together"

Schleswig-Holstein's Finance Minister Monika Heinold informed herself about the wind turbines installed by LuvSide on the roof of Kiel University of Applied Sciences and puts it in a nutshell: "This project impressively shows how energy transition and research are thought together."

Private Wind Turbines for One-Family Homes - the Dream of Going Off-Grid?

The idea of being able to generate electricity off-grid as a private person with a wind turbine in the garden of your own house is very attractive. But what can you really expect from a small private wind turbine in terms of the energy it generates and what do you need to consider when installing it at your own home?

Generators for Wind Turbine Applications - Part 2: How to Pick One

There are several types of generators that can be coupled to small wind turbines: most importantly DC or AC types and synchronous or asynchronous that operate with permanent magnets or electrical field excitation respectively.
